Dig In! Yancey Community Garden
| Our mission is to build and maintain a volunteer-operated community garden and, through established partnerships with local hunger relief agencies, provide fresh fruits and vegetables to people within our community who are in need of food assistance. The garden will also serve an educational function, to teach, inspire, and empower people in Yancey County to grow their own healthy foods using modern, sustainable methods. Already 300 pounds of produce have been harvested and donated to the Reconciliation House and local soup kitchens! |

Our objectives for the first two years are
1) to provide at least 3000 lbs of fresh food (6000 in the second year) to local relief agencies
.
2) To host educational sessions on small-scale gardening and farming for people in the Yancey community.
3) To host educational sessions on preparation of healthy produce
4) To be a partner with Mayland Community College in education about new and alternative cash crops for small farmers.

Some of you asked whether or not your class time with Patryk in the garden counts as volunteer time The steering committee feels that for our reporting purposes, class time would NOT count as volunteer time since you are getting credit from Mayland for those hours. But we appreciate every minute you have spent making the community garden grow!
Here is a photo taken by Deborah Palmer when she worked with Patryk in the garden last Friday. They were very excited to discover several beneficial insects in the garden, including syrphid flies and braconid wasps!
Come on out and spend a lovely summer evening in the garden. There's no telling what you might discover!
