Healthy
Yancey began in 2000 with a few steering committee members and has evolved
into a partnership of concerned citizens working together to improve the
quality of health in Yancey County. One of the most essential components
of Healthy Yancey is the involvement of local citizens in the process
of assessing health needs and developing community-identified solutions.
Currently, Healthy Yancey is being funded by Kate B. Reynolds Charitable
Trust, and the Governor's Task Force for Healthy Carolinians.

Healthy
Carolinians is a statewide network of partnerships that address health
and safety issues at the community level. Community members, agencies,
health advisory groups, and service providers come together to collect
and organize resources around a shared vision. The primary focus is to
improve health by making the best use of limited local resources through
a group effort. The benefits are that a healthier future is built for
you, your family, and your friends and neighbors.
Healthy Yancey has either led or significantly contributed
to:
Community Health Assessment,
Town of Burnsville Pedestrian Plan,
Yancey County Health Resource Guide,
Historic Walking Tour Map,
Ray Cort Park Walking Trails
as well as partnering with GCHSTR on a variety of other projects.

Graham Children’s Health Services of Toe River (GCHSTR)
is a nonprofit 501 (c) (3) incorporated in 1997. It is community-based, community-led, volunteer coalition with the vision of every child in the Toe River Area achieving the best possible health.
The Mission Statement best expresses the purpose…
“Graham Children’s Health Services of Toe River is a collaborative effort that involves, educates and unites the community for the design and implementation of strategies that will improve the health of children now and in the future”.
We believe that working together, the community and local agencies can develop creative, sustainable solutions to our children’s needs. Lead by a diverse, committed, Board of Directors, GCHSTR involves the community in the planning and implementation of projects to identify and eliminate barriers to wellness for our children. The organization has diligently worked to improve the physical, emotional, and social health of the children through diverse community projects such as:
• Establishment of the Toe River Children’s Dental Clinic—a children’s dental practice to address the high level of unmet dental needs of low-income children
• Implementation of Tar Wars—school-based tobacco use prevention program
• Development of Centro De Enlace—a Hispanic Advocacy Program—to address the health care disparities identified in our growing Hispanic population
• Construction of Kid Mountain-Yancey Community Built Playground, Ray-Cort Skate Park and renovation of the Old Burnsville Gym—to address the need for safe, accessible, play spaces and to promote physical activity.
Projects supported by GCHSTR are initiated at the bequest of the community either directly identified through a formal needs assessment or presented to GCHSTR by community groups who desire to collaborate to bring specific projects to fruition.
